I’m a creator, born that way, part of the DNA. I’m at my best when I’m creating. If I don’t create I don’t sustain my well-being, I get tired, grumpy, disengaged and depressed. If I don’t create I ache for it.
On the other hand when I build my days around art-making I feel great; inspired, energised and on purpose. I don’t assume that everyone is born a creator, but I do know that many of us are and if you are, then you know it at some level.
Instinctively I knew I wanted to make art and teach creativity from about the age of twenty. But I didn’t. I pursued other paths, took side-tracks, followed other people’s dreams, put on a suit and tie, made money, did corporate stuff. Eventually my creative DNA called me on it. Stopped me in my tracks, shut me down. Creativity knocked on my door until I listened and responded with a yes, yes, YES!
It’s been nearly 5 years since that first tentative affirmation and every year, as the DNA works its magic, I’m happier, stronger, lighter and far more deeply engaged in life. I’ve found my way. Or perhaps, as Elizabeth Gilbert might put it ‘my way found me’. If you’re a creator and you know it, don’t wait. Answer the call, take the risk, make a start, live your dream. After all, the universe made you a creator so why not trust that it will also reveal your unique creative pat.
